AP Language & Composition Core Texts

All of the core texts taught in Ms. Engelbrecht's AP Language & Composition classes are listed below. Please click on the title of the book to see the specific version that we are using in class. AP students are expected to purchase the following novels for use inside and outside of class. Some copies of the assigned books may be available in the book depository for students with financial hardships or limited access to supplies.

The schedule is subject to change, meaning that some novels/units may be moved around or deleted. For this reason, I DO NOT recommend that you purchase all of the novels at the beginning of the school year. Please wait till the next unit is confirmed before acquiring the novel for that unit.

If you do choose to check out your novels from the LAHS Book Depository (C Wing), they are available free of charge (or included in student fees, depending on how you look at it :).

  1. Students must have their student IDs to check out books from the book depository. Tell Mrs. Baker that you need ________ book for Ms. Engelbrecht's class.

  2. Students must return books in the same condition in which they were checked out. Students will be required to pay for novels which have been marked up, torn, stained, or otherwise damaged.

  3. Before students can check out a new novel for Ms. Engelbrecht's class, they must return the novel they had checked out previously for the same class. So, if you do not return Thank You for Arguing, you will not be able to check out 1984 later in the year. To end this vicious cycle, please see Mrs. Baker to pay for the novels you may have lost or irreparably damaged so that you will be able to check out the next novel. Need to ask Mrs. Baker about a book? Send her an email.

Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) and Read Write Think Journaling

During the first 12 minutes of every other class, students will read non-fiction books of their choosing. This time serves three purposes:

1) it give students time to de-stress and mentally prepare for English class,

2) it builds in the opportunity for students to read something of their choosing,

3) it promotes reading habits that will also improve vocabulary acquisition and writing, and

4) the response portion encourages students to reflect on what they are reading, making text connections.

Students will use this class time to complete at least four books of their choosing per year, one book per quarter.

Students can bring non-fiction books to class with them, or they can select a non-fiction book from the classroom library that suits their tastes. The classroom library is stocked with hundreds of books that were recommended by previous years' students. This library has been generously supplied and funded by donations from former students and parents.
