Professional Goal
My goal is to support students as a secondary teacher specializing in literacy, writing, critical thinking and discussion skills.
I ultimately plan to work in higher education or the private sector in a role that allows me to continue supporting students and teachers, particularly with structured literacy, critical thinking, practical instructional design with real world applications, argumentative, narrative, and analysis writings, questioning of texts, patterns within texts, and productive discussion skills.

I worked in a suburban public high school. My career at EMHS includes preparing advanced placement and on-level students for the English II EOI exam held annually in April, teaching students in whole group, small groups and one-on-one, creating curriculum for newly adopted books that abides by the CCSS (OAS) standards, attending and contributing to grade level PLC meetings, attending district wide professional development concerning technology and differentiated instruction, communicating with parents and guardians concerning progress and behavior, conducting conferences with parents and students, working with the administration to implement and enforce classroom management techniques, and utilizing education websites Edmodo, Pinnacle/Globe Scholar, SMS, and Edusoft as teaching and assessment aids. I completed the AP/Pre-AP English training with the National Mathematics & Science Institute (NMSI). I met with students multiple times a week to assess their strengths and weaknesses, assist with homework and test preparation, and provide intervention to fill in knowledge gaps that hold students back from excelling in all subjects. I viewed student test scores, writing samples, report cards and teacher testimonies to target the student's problem areas and provide specialized instruction. I worked with the student, his or her parents, and his or her teachers and resource specialists to provide the best and most comprehensive education possible.
I worked with a number of other Administrative Testing Assistants and the Chief Testing Administrator to proctor the Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators (CEOE) at Norman North High School. I set up a classroom testing environment, distributed testing materials, managed the testing environment and monitored examinees.
I managed the curriculum library in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education at the University of Oklahoma. I was responsible for shelving and categorizing books, assisting students, operating the copy machine and completing special assignments assigned by the dean's staff.

I am having experiences shadowing an elementary school reading coach, middle school language arts teachers working with digital literacy, a high school literacy specialist, a teacher of exceptional learners and an English Language teacher. I have been involved in individual reading assessments, group assessment data from standardized tests, action plans for reading remediation, textbook adoption selection, district reading professional development, grade level professional development pertaining to reading instruction and assessment, individual and small group reading intervention.
I completed research in the area of vocabulary acquisition, investigating effective methods of vocabulary instruction and assessment appropriate for high school students. This research includes several examples of instruction that are supported by contemporary research and data. This literature review was compiled in December 2012.
I am designing a capstone project that focuses on motivating ninth grade students to read through "choice" of text. Estimated completion of project in June 2013.
I am writing curriculum for a high school classroom that addresses the lack of African American Civil Rights Education in secondary education. The unit focuses on literature of the movement, including essays, personal narratives, poems, speeches, articles, young adult literature and novels. I plan to incorporate it into my classroom and possibly expand the curriculum to a semester-long elective course. This curriculum will be presented the National Council of Teachers of English as a panel presentation for their 2013 conference with Dr. Ann Neely.

I was a panelist on the four-person discussion panel following the Oklahoma Education Association's screening of Race to Nowhere, serving as the student representative and speaking on my past frustrations with standardized testing, ACT scoring, college admissions based on K-12 extra-curricular and academic performance, and stigmas attached to attending a community college.
